Saturday 8th March 9.30am to 12.30pm @The Pavilion, Penn Street
£55 per person
Suitable for beginners. Everyone will leave with a selection of modules of vegetables to grow on at home.
Since we moved to The Pavilion last Summer we have waited patiently for the wheel of the year to turn for the exact right time to run this brand new class.
Our Grow Your Own Veg class will be run by Ross Haynes, whose day to day job is running the stunning walled gardens on our neighbouring Penn Estate. Ross brings with him a wealth of expert knowledge from his many years of growing a wide range of vegetables in the Walled Garden for the Estate.
In this 3 hour class you will be given a really proficient overview of everything you need to know to have delicious, nutritious home grown veggies by early summer even if you have a teeny weeny plot in your garden.
The class will start at The Pavilion, where over a quick cuppa and delicious home made cake Ross will give us all a basic intro and explain the basics of growing. He will also share what seeds he is growing now, both using a heated propagator and without. For anyone starting from complete scratch windowsill methods for complete novices will be shared so please don’t worry about having all the kit!
Whilst we are at The Pavilion, Ross will also encourage us all to have a go at sowing seeds and 'potting on' once seeds have germinated.
Once we've got our own little veggies underway we will take a short (but rather lovely) stroll down to The Walled Garden (less than 10mins walk). Once there, Ross will show us how to prepare a seed bed, what can be added to the soil for maximum productivity, how he looks after his soil and some gardening tips and tricks including the 'no dig' method. We will also look at sowing seeds directly into the soil.
Being at The Walled Garden will give us the perfect opportunity to take a leisurely look around the really well-established vegetable beds and talk about the over winter veggies that have been providing the Estate with locally grown produce for many years. Ross will also share what he is growing this year and good varieties for us to look out for,
Back at The Pavilion we will look at growing in limited space and how to really maximise your vegetable patch so that you are using it all year round.
We will finish up with you creating your own GYO plan focusing on your 5 ‘must have’ plants. Ross will support you with what to plant and when and how that will best work in your space.
This promises to be a really super introduction to growing veg for anyone who has never tried it before but also a really informative session for anyone who wants to get the very most out of their existing veg growing space (like me!) and finds it empty for large parts of the year!
