Our 4-week 'Play with Clay' course is perfect for anyone who wants to learn the basics of ceramics or continue building their pottery skills. The aim of this course have fun but also to make some really practical, useable objects.
Your teacher, Caroline Oden (co-founder of Where Inspiration Blooms), is an experienced potter, having taught this course regularly at Where Inspiration Blooms over the last 6 years. Caroline is a really generous teacher, sharing all of her tips and tricks so that you can produce pieces you are really proud of, which is why this course is always so popular.
For the first 3 weeks, you will be using slab and hand-building techniques to make a plate, a bowl and a vase/plant pot. You will learn how to work with the clay, and how to give beautiful finishes to your pieces. Using leaves, grasses, lace and stamps, you will learn the best methods to create texture and personalised designs.
You will also learn how to add details with techniques including coloured slip, sgraffito and score & slip. Each week you will create an interesting and completely individual item which will go on to be fired in our kiln. We will fire your 2 best pieces from each of first 3 pottery sessions - so 6 pieces in total.
The final week of the course will be devoted to glazing your 6 fired pieces. We have a wide selection of glazes and underglazes for you to choose from, or you can also bring your own if you have a specific colour you would like to use. Additional detail and effects can be added at this stage using wax resist techniques.
This course is good for both absolute beginners wishing to explore ceramics but also anyone one who has done a bit of ceramic work before and wants to take it further. There will be plenty of 1-to-1 tuition.
These sessions will be held in our new Studio in Holmer Green and limited to a maximum of 14 people to ensure that everyone gets the benefit of Caroline's time and expertise.
Before you book this class please note the following:
- you will need to come and collect your pieces of work at a later date
- sadly we are not able to post pieces of pottery out
- you will be notified on email approximately 4 weeks after your class to let you know that your work is ready for collection
- Pieces will be kept for 4-weeks from this point. After this time they will be disposed of to make room for other people’s work
We very much look forward to welcoming you to The Studio!
